Chromatography of Amino Acids

We are doing the Chemistry Forensics option for the first time and I'm setting up the Paper Chromatography of Amino Acids, using Glutamic Acid and Glycine. The teacher has given me the first page of the worksheet from Conquering Chemistry which says things like 'think carefully about the solvent you...

Re: help

I've been working on it since October. Science was done, of course, then I had to chase all the other faculties. Then there was art. The HT said they were too busy to stocktake and they didn't have anything anyway. And I was way too busy to stocktake for them. But then my SAM designated me the perso...

Re: Phenyl salicylate and crystal formation.

We did this years ago. Dropped a little salol onto a slide and passed it through a flame until the crystals melted, then watched the crystals form under a microscope. The slides were stored for future use. The teachers loved it then, but its fallen out of use recently.

Re: Risk Assessment

The way I pushed it was that CSIS risk assesses the chemicals , but not the equipment. I mean, how many teachers would consider that metre rulers 'may be used for sword fighting', or that heat mats 'may be thrown ninja style'. And since we have a number of generalist and primary trained teachers tak...

How do I clean up burnt honey/sugar

One of my teachers had a wonderful time making honeycomb pumice last period yesterday. :clap3: Eight groups with hotplates. Apparently the kids loved it - massive boiling over of 'lava' which caught fire and splattered all over the benches and floor. :clap3: :clap3: And set off the smoke detectors. ...

Re: Flier for St Mary's

St Mary Park View Motel is the nearest - about 500m from the Conference.
But they're full. :-(
I left it too late to book there this year, so I'm staying at the Blue Cattle Dog Hotel Motel - about a 5 minute drive away.

Platinum Electrodes in Hoffman Voltameter

I have several of these where the platinum piece has come away from the wire. Does anyone know if there is any way to repair them? They're tiny, fiddly pieces of platinum.

Thanks

Soldering Iron

Hi all, I need to buy a soldering iron. I'm looking at the ones from Blackwoods, and they seem to range from 25W to 175W. They all say for general purpose, and come with six tips and a stand. Any ideas on which one I should get?

Re: Cations and Anions

Well I opened a new bottle of ferrous ammonium sulfate and made up fresh solutions. Now it works. They both turn blue with potassium ferricyanide, but only the Fe3+ goes brown with potassium thiocyanide. I guess I'll have to make it up fresh on Tuesday ...............and hope the assessment task is ...

Cations and Anions

Hi Chemtalkers, I'm preparing the Year 12 assesment task and I'm having trouble with Fe2+ and Fe3+. Fe2+ has a greenish precipitate with NaOH and Fe3+ has a brown precipitate - as they should. But they react the same in the confirmation tests. ie they both turn dark blue with potassium ferricyanide ...

Re: Sound in a vacuum

I've got the Scientrific Vacuum jar as well. It will evacuate to -90kpa, but the bell (suspended) is still audible. And my balloon only partially expands - nowhere near bursting. How do you get a better result?
