Re: Mercurochrome
I can remember painting red "smileys" on kids' knees with it! Interestingly, a quick trip around Mr G. Oogle shows that it was removed as a precautionary against mercury poisoning, rather than in a response to any recorded episodes. I also found this : http://ispub.com/IJS/21/2/5354 which ...

Re: Rare - Earth Magnets
Didn't we do this somewhere else?
I place the two magnets against the edge of a bench (one with squared edges), so that one magnets is resting on the bench and the other over the edge (on thin air). Then I push down on the one in the air and they separate

Re: Smoke Alarms
The school has smoke alarms in other classrooms - always useful for if a piece of electrical equipment is quietly overheating whilst unobserved - but NOT in the Science labs for obvious reasons. We have set them off when kids used sparklers in a General Classroom, rather than a lab. Made me laugh AN...

Re: Risk Assessments
Said this somewhere before but I love it!!! Now we subscribe to Student Risk Assess too. It means that kids doing EEI's can assess their own risks, and it gives them something to print out and hold. RiskAssess stores the RA's you have created, although I always hit "save" and have created ...

Think I got mine from Scientrific - about $120. Pretty good, shows waves in 3D. Needs a shot of WD40 every so often, especially up here.

Re: Kinetic Theory in Action - NaHSO3
We also do a really cool experiment with a gas tube, overhead acetate and pH paper. I cut a very long skinny strip of acetate, that fits into a gas tube or, even better, a gas tube or burette that has a broken end. Then I cut little slashes into the acetate at regular intervals, so that I could weav...

Re: Yeast culture
I've used ordinary Baker's yeast & a bit of sugar. Leave for a bit, until you can see that it's frothy, then drop some on some slides.
The trick is to clean the flask (or whatever container) very thoroughly with boiling water or sodium metabisulphite so that the yeast doesn't die.

Re: melting of lead
Hey Jazz, It took me a while to track down chapter and verse, but here it is: The National Standard for Control of Inorganic Lead at Work refers to "melting lead at less than 450 degrees" in Schedule II, and in 12.1 "any work that exposes a person to lead fumes" it say "the ...

Re: home loan protection
Well, having just been on 12 months of income protection, check with your Super mob first. Very often you will already be insured for income protection through them, and sometimes additional income protection is an unnecessary add-on, depending on the amount of cover that you can get from your Super...

Hey guys, I just put together this fantastic DNA prac using gel electrophoresis, and the dyes from Southern Bio. Fairly cheap, using wow factor equipment, and (since I wrote the prac sheet) also funny and scandalous - as all good paternity pracs are. I've only included the front page and a photo of ...

Re: melting of lead
Short answer (impolite) - "Hell no!" Slightly longer answer (polite) - "well....no you may not." Explanation: What folks do on their own time in their own airspace is NOT your business, but no-one may create lead vapour in your airspace and on your time BECAUSE it's not allowed a...
