I wouldn't worry. Litmus itself is not hazardous, so legally, we are not required to have a SDS for it. We only need SDSs for hazardous chemicals.
I certainly wouldn't worry about finding an SDS for litmus paper.

Re: updating SDS's
Check your legislation but I think it is very similar to NSW. Staff that handle, use or store any hazardous chemicals must have access to a SDS. You have to consider that there may be staff without convenient access to a computer e.g. your maintenance team. Also consider if there is a power or inter...

Re: Mineral and rock safety alert
I was here for the start of it (2011 - I'm RosalieM on page 1) but not the 2015/2016 discussion. I've printed out the document linked from November 2015 which looks kind of official and put it with the rocks to deal with later! Yeah, if it is the one I saw, it looks "kind of" official. Ce...

Re: Mineral and rock safety alert
Ah, did you miss out there! At the time this was going around, I worked in a different school system. They had tested a number of kits at a sample school and determined that all kits containing the baddies were to be destroyed. We had to fork out the cost of a guy coming out in almost hazmat gear to...

Casual available Term 2 2023
I have a person looking for casual work. Is a Biology graduate so chemical handling is good. He worked with me last year for a few months. Knows how schools work and is familiar with Riskassess. He's happy to do whatever needs to be done. Available from mid-May until mid-August. Can work Southern Hi...

Set it and plead not guilty - "must be Riskassess doing it".

Re: Ordering for Practical Lessons
With keeping copies of RA... we do only for the year they are running. At the end of the year I do a backup on RA and send them all to a file. No more hard copies anywhere and they are then saved in the system for ever. Riskassess also have a number of back ups in their system, too. I am not really...

Re: Slowing down agar plate growth?
I ended up taking them out of the incubator, putting in the chem store which is the coolest part of the prep room. We had a scorcher of a weekend for March - high 30s so I'm not sure if it was any different to being in the incubator, although it would have been cooler at night. Anyway, results were ...

Re: Slowing down agar plate growth?
Are you able to take a photo of them for him? or one of the teachers? The only potential "problem" I can think of would be if condensation formed inside it might go a little weird... are there other plates in the incubator? Can you just turn it down to whatever the lowest setting is or wi...

Re: Ordering for Practical Lessons
Jumping in on an old thread here... Just wondering who still prints out the RAs if you use RiskAssess? Also, a thought on NSW DoE not needing to do RAs because of the CSIS, how many teachers actually reference the CSIS when ordering their pracs? Do they check each time that the chemical hasn't been...

Slowing down agar plate growth?
Hello Brains Trust! I have a Year 10 student doing his SRP using agar plates. They were put in the incubator yesterday. He checked them and took photos today. He won't be here tomorrow as Year 10 have an activities day. If I leave them over the weekend, they will potentially be looking very overgrow...

My one wish is to be able to buy glass tubing that I know will fit into the rubber tubing I've bought.oakley.mcmillan wrote: ↑14 Mar 2023, 16:05 What is a product you always wished you could see in the lab? (open to your suggestions)
Same with bungs - knowing which size you need for the test tubes you're buying.

The blue and yellow plastic ones are terrible for falling apart. We have one here but also have two metal ones that seem to do a great job. These were bought by the previous labbie and I do know not long after he bought those, I couldn't source them for the school I was at at the time. Maybe someon...

Re: Limit on number of Practicals done each week?
I think it is hard for people in NSW to comment as it seems we work in systems with different expectations. In NSW teachers order pracs and we provide the equipment and chemicals etc. There is no expectation (in most schools) that we set up pracs. If the pracs need to be tested out, it is usually do...

Re: cutting contact
The heavy duty labels are the same size as the Riskassess templates. As long as they are printed on a laser printer, you will have no problems with them running. I have had to change the silver nitrate labels after about three years of use because of the stains but otherwise, I've had no problems. T...

Re: cutting contact
Buy the Avery heavy duty labels and you don't need contact. I know, bit late now but worth the cost. I don't think it will ruin the blade of the guillotine, but I'm not sure it will happily cut it. It could be tricky. And Macca - the sticky tape. My predecessor used sticky tape and it is so difficul...

yes bigmack, ours are slightly different but essentially the same thing. I think I will toss them. I just wanted to check there wasn't one random prac they came out for in an obscure topic area before I ditch them. I feel like I should offer them to a museum! And the minute you do that, there...
