Licenses for keeping frogs in QLD
Hi Labbies, Does anyone know what the rules are for keeping frogs (native) in QLD? I would like to have 1 or 2 frogs for educational purposes only, not to be dissected. I have been doing a bit of research and info is a bit conflicting. We have set up a tank and a student brought in some Guppies and ...

Re: Exposure to contaminated petri dishes
QUOTE: Still, double check how and where the plates were inoculated, just to be certain of what you might have been exposed to. It does sound as if your science teacher is not on the ball with 'exercising all due care'. The students should not have been allowed to open the plates after they were tap...

Re: Exposure to contaminated petri dishes
I guess it all depends on what bacteria you are dealing with. I have accidently been exposed to agar plates and never got sick. The bacteria you get from Southern Biological is school safe, any contact with the bacteria i doubt is going to be a major concern unless you stick you fingers in your mout...

Re: lab refurb or oh God cant someone help me
HI All, I feel for you. It must be a catholic school thing as my school is building new labs and they have not consulted with me at all. Not even my boss. My boss has put many ideas forward and then they do the complete opposite. I am planning for the worst. The last lab refurb was a nightmare. Last...

Re: Dataloggers
Definitely Vernier. At my previous school we have Pasco and had nothing but problems and felt like they were cheaply made. Vernier dataloggers are strong and can take a bit of abuse from the students and I have never had any problems. The software is really good and compatible. You can purchase vern...

Re: supplier of eyes for dissection
I use Dissection connection. They are very prompt and last time we ordered eyes, the teacher was impressed. I have found with frozen eyes, they can turn out a bit yuk once they have thawed but with Dissection Connection, they are vacuum sealed and sent express.

Re: Do you help with Science budget???????
Your not the only one, in all of my 4 schools Ive worked at, the lab tech has always had some involvement with the budget whether its just ordering or organising the budget. Generally the lab tech will take care of most of it, but there are certain things that the HOD has to approve. At the end of e...

Re: Do you help with Science budget???????
I also complete all the purchase reqs and reimbursements. My boss keeps a close eye on the budget but I always make sure the budget is in order. I know hes very busy so I dont mind doing it, he does check it from time to time. Anything I purchase of high value, I always run past my HOD. Our budget w...

Hey Labbies,
I am currently trying to source some Geology microscope slides. I have looked everywhere and can't seem to find any. If anyone knows of a company that sells geology prepared slides, please let me know. Thanks
Regards,
Dave

Re: First day back and not happy
Thanks for the tip smiley, its been 3 weeks and the smell is still awful. Im guessing the fridge was off for at least a month.....it was another world in that fridge. The only thing that stopped me from throwing up was a peg on the nose and still I could only handle it for a minute at a time. Done a...

Re: Chemical labels
I just use Chemwatch, copy and paste the labels into word and adjust them accordingly. I find this works well and chemwatch is always being updated so the information on the labels should be up to date. I have used other labelling programs but I find Chemwatch to be the easiest and most efficient. T...

Re: Drosophila / Fruit fly breeding for genetics
Also we have some dinolites (digital microscopes) there about $60 each but are fantastic for identifying the sexes and characteristics. Alot easier then using hand lens and you can plug them straight into a laptop or computer to bring the picture up.

I don't know about NSW, depends on quarantine. Do you have fruit fly in NSW, I know that in SA no fruit is allowed into the state.

Re: Drosophila / Fruit fly breeding for genetics

You can purchase them from Southern Biological and they are more then happy to help. The white eyed and vesidual wings worked well, didnt have much luck with the ebony. If you have...

Re: First day back and not happy
I am guessing it was off between 3-4 weeks, so I think its nearly impossible to get rid of the smell. It still smells terrible and I have tried everything. Everytime a teachers walks into the prep room they nearly dry reach. The smell isnt really bothering me anymore, however I am trying my best to ...
