Re: The Universal Mystery
I have made our Universal Indicator for at least 14 years now and when you make it you have to put in the NaOH to make it change from the red to the green. It is quite fun to watch as you add the NaOH, the drops turn green but then it is absorbed by the whole of the liquid and turns red again. You j...

Re: Microscope Problems
You probably should ring ISSCO as they are only new. We have had lots of different ones from them with no probs. They would be covered under a guarantee? If not, they would still be the ones to ask how to fix.

Re: acids in plastic bottles
Actually it is not only acids that react. Strong NaOH will also send the plastic brittle. No doubt exposure to light doesn't help. Over the years, I've had a few bottles crack up, but you can usually see a tell-tale crack before the whole thing goes. I still use them 'cause they're lighter to cart a...

Re: Clean burnt Sugar from glassware
1M or 2M max NaOH should do the trick. It will loosen just about anything. Even melted (sublimed?) sulfur from test tubes or deflagrating spoons. Might need to leave them for a couple of days, just keep soaking till the stuff lifts off. Have a nice weekend all :

Yes I can get in now, but it won't search for the chemical. Small steps - maybe after lunch it will work.

I've been getting the same deal. All day yesterday and again this morning. Our computer guy said to see him at recess, as it may be an internal error - I don't know about that though. Particularly if you're having the same problem.

Hi Robb,
Sorry to get on the band waggon so late, but is there a chance of getting a copy of your R A form please? We are not up to speed here, and I'm sure it is time we were. If you could manage it, our fax number is 67424429

I just soak in water - or maybe rinse under hot tap. Don't remember having too many problems.

Re: Free Glassware
Hi,
We use the big leibig condensors (with juniors) and would love some. But getting them from you could prove difficult, as it would mean packaging and posting. Please let me know, if no one else local wants them, and I will put feelers out for some one going to Sydney to pick them up. Ta

Re: Standard soap solution
If the teacher can't tell you how to make it up then whatever you do can't be wrong! So just make it up yourself and it will probably be OK. As the teachers have told me in the past, we only teach bucket chemistry. When you do have to be acurate, they will have the instructions, you can bet.

Re: Spirit- Burners
I use a Dymo Label Manager, which is just a fancy dymo machine. The labels will still sometimes crinkle, depending how long the label is or the particular burner. But spilt metho etc doesn't make the label run.

Re: Dilute H2O2
For ease of measurement use 50ml 35% H2O2 to 250ml distilled water to give 300ml total. You can buy 6% H2O2 but I got caught recently with the 35% and watered it down as mentioned, with no complaints. Good luck!

Re: Sintered Glass Gooch type Crucibles
Hi Lada
Thank you very much for your prompt fax. Have handed it on to the chem teacher. Think I'll put a hold on the sintered glass crucibles, as this method does look better, and buy some alizarin red instead. Thanks again.
