Re: Glass wool
Thanks everyone, it's for making detection tubes. I actually wondered if cotton wool would do as a sub? Fibreglass sounds better - wearing masks of course! All I need is something that holds the silica in place but allows air to pass through it easily too. Yep Smiley - it does sound like I'm setting...

Glass wool
Hey everyone (It's either a feast or famine from me - mmmm feast today!)...
I'm trying to source some glass wool.
Also, I did read it's not recommended for Year 10, which is who the teacher wants to use it with. Does anyone have it at all?
Thanks! Kel

Microscope cover slips
Hi all, I was just wondering what you all do with Junior classes and cover slips? I am finding that they are going through them like wildfire but it was my understanding that not everything always needs one. I also have issues with the juniors using them - because I cut myself very easily with them ...

Re: sodium metal
Robb, would doing this prac in a smaller container actually be more dangerous because it would warm the smaller amount of water quicker??
Thanks, Kel
Thanks, Kel

Does anyone have trouble with teachers not actually reading through the risks & controls or even actually use the eliminate/substitute thingy...? I know it would be easier using this program but our school neither has the money & I wonder if it makes the teachers lazy or take the whole proce...

Re: sodium metal
I agree with Ocker - last semester at uni I had a lecturer demonstrate the Group 1 metals reactions with water & because some students urged him, he used a bigger chunk (it wasn't that big either!) - as he was putting it into the water (not IN the water - just NEAR it) it exploded in his face! L...

Hi, hope everyones having a lovely day so far! Just a quick request - has anyone got any cheap alternatives for ways to measure abiotic factors (light intensity, TDS, humidity, chloride ions, wind speed, etc.) not using meters... for a prac a teacher here wants to do? Also does anyone do this prac &...

I have the same problem here. If they don't worry about their health then I don't either. I also have signs "No eating / drinking" etc... & they have been told, so if we were to get a visit from OH&S or similar then I have documented that ALL staff were notified about the protocols...

Re: Changing flower colours
Did this prac this morning with Year 10s while looking at chemical reaction types... Fake white roses - the kids soaked the rose themselves in UI in Kartell bottles (we told them if they wet them too much the reaction wouldn't work). They dried them & then we used ammonia as the base & 0.1M ...

Cool - keep us posted guys! I wonder if hydrangea flowers - you know the ones that are blue in acid soil / pink in basic... or is it the other way around?! - would work? I'm assuming the acidity / basicity stays in the flowers though......... Don't suppose you could spray with both acid & base t...
