Re: making cell models
Never tried it but I'd imagine it would taste pretty bad even with all the lollies floating in it. I used to make jelly for my son when he was a little tacker using fruit juice and gelatine. Maybe you could try cordial or something like that if it works out cheaper. Fill the kids up on sugar then se...

Re: Disposal of used agar plates
Google the brand name. Most companies have their user manuals on line. Or, share the brand name here and someone else may have the same one.

Re: Attachment - how to add
Thanks for this Bigmack. I've only had a chance to look at those instructions today and it explains why I have never attached a photo! Maybe my future will be different

Re: testing for microbes
Fair call, Rosalie. There was a lot of discussion quite a few years ago about students not being allowed to swab anything and having to grow peppercorn broth or something weird. It was a misinterpretation of CSIS which advised against sub-culturing anything growing on agar plates. However, I think S...

Re: nickel sulfate
We go by RiskAssess as well. CSIS hasn't been updated for decades, the Dept must be waiting for a legal case before they start?? It's bound to happen, one day, sadly. Had to laugh at this, but it isn't really a laughing matter! I went to a general WHS course run by AIS and, can you believe, they sa...

Re: Free elements sets for schools
Apologies is I sound slightly cranky, but after loading and labelling ca. 60K samples, and assembling 1600 sets across two rounds of sets (including the last bit I need to do over summer), most of it personally, it does start to annoy me when I have to wade through more than 1000 orders currently o...

Re: Free elements sets for schools
Thank you Stuart. They are really clever and already popular. I was on leave when they arrived. Haven't had much time to look at them and was certainly unaware of the website! So, thank you for the extra information.

Just a thought - is the top the same size as a dropper bottle? You can buy caps for the dropper bottles.

Re: Free elements sets for schools
I did have a thought afterwards. We put some mercury switches into these containers - tiny amount of mercury (so tiny, I couldn't really see the point). I decided to glue the lids shut and I had the casual use a really small dot of superglue to do so. That was twelve months ago and they are still fi...

Re: Free elements sets for schools
We have them set up in the display cabinet (all glass) similar to above with the teachers notes standing next to them, they are in the classroom so accessible for students and teachers. I do find them out during Yr 10 science. Make sure you glue the lids on..... and DONT use Super Glue it makes the...

Re: Free elements sets for schools
My coordinator got hold of these whilst I was on leave. Very neat.
Now trying to work out the best way to display/store them. Have you had any thoughts, Anna?

Re: microscopes
Seems that the repair people give Motics a good wrap. After lots of umming and ahhing, not being able to actually see one of these models, I have taken the leap and ordered some.
But thanks for the reinforcement of my decision!

Re: split pea DNA
I run with the idea that the senior students don't remember what they did in junior years. Once had a Bio class insist they had never used microscopes before! We just stick with strawberries. I buy frozen ones so they are on hand. We often do this prac out of strawberry season and the frozen ones ar...

microscopes
I'm looking to buy some new senior microscopes and have been quoted (among others) for Motic BA-80 microscopes. Just wondered if anyone had these and your thoughts. Also, as I'm in Tahmoor, is there anyone around Campbelltown or Southern Highlands that has these that I could have a look at? Apprecia...

Re: Safety data sheets
That's a good idea. Highlight the first aid and maybe the spill procedures. Invest in some Post-it Flags to indicate those pages. Good time to remind the teacher that they should be referring to the SDS when preparing their risk assessment for the prac, ie reading the SDS before they use the product...

Re: Safety data sheets
Mini SDS are not recognised by Safework as being a SDS, so they aren't much good on their own. You still need to have the correct SDS. Apart from a mini SDS not having all the required information, they are produced (by Chemwatch) a third party. The SDS must be provided by the manufacturer or suppli...

Re: Eyes for dissection
We've given up on brains, too (like a few people around here :cheesy: ). Last lots were in pieces, not whole. Teachers decided that the brain dissection is not worth the cost. However, things like hearts and eyes certainly have a lot of value especially for seniors. I've been on leave for five month...
