We buy preserved rats from Southern Biological, but you can also buy the frozen ones from Dissection Connection - although last time I looked, it was cheaper to buy a stillborn piglet...

Re: Taking Mercury to the class room
We bought a spill kit last year with no problems. We still have a demo bottle of mercury here but that is all. Most teachers don't want to use it, but occasionally one will bring it into the room to show them. Luckily at the moment I can trust ALL of my teachers to use it appropriately and not let t...

Re: Welcome everyone to 2022
Thanks bigmack and a huge welcome back to you too!
I had a shift on the RAT stall too, actually a very pleasant way to spend an afternoon. They set up a cabana for us under some trees and I was rostered on with some friends.

Re: Mopping the ceiling, anyone?
Our favourite game is to see who can add another stain to the ceiling in the labs! So far elephant's toothpaste has done the ceilings in 3 labs, and harvesting oxygen has done the ceiling in another.

Re: Gratnells glasses kits from MTA
I bought the foam inserts, but not the Gratnells trays. I then put the inserts into old drawers we have and voila, glasses safe and it is very easy to spot the missing ones! There is a space at the end of the drawer to fit sanitiser, soap & paper towel.

We purchased a set of analogue ammeters and voltmeters from MTA last year. So far they are lasting well, but of course they haven't had a huge amount of use thanks to lockdowns...

Re: mercury thermometers
We are keeping ours, they are locked away in the chem store but they measure much higher temps than our alcohol ones can.
That said, they haven't been used on the last 6 years or more. But I know the minute I dispose of them we will need them for something.

Nothing creative - ours are leaning against a little used shelf in the storeroom and are then leaning against a handy wall in the nearest preproom when they have been ordered for a lesson.

Re: double fume hoods
I have used velcro dots on the classroom side to put up a poster which blocks the view. If the teacher needs students to see in we simply remove the poster and replace it when the prac is over. I got sick of being the latest animal in the zoo! NOTE: The velcro is on the outside of the fume hood

Re: Azure Virtual Desktop to access Faculty and User drives for DET staff
It is the best thing ever! Yes, I can confirm that it works on private devices. My home computer is far superior to anything the dept issues to a SAO so I didn't bother asking for a school computer. It is so handy being able to access documents directly from the server, and being able to save them t...

We bought our last lot from MTA - they were the cheapest I could find that were a reputable supplier.
There were cheaper listed on some random sites but I just wasn't confident in using them.
