Re: MSDS again

Yes, I did, and it rates them as non-hazardous and non-dangerous. So I really think that using them as we do should not present a problem - but I still think I'll use an alternative in future. I have searched the MSDS for every chemical in our science faculty (including dilutions) on Chemwatch and i...

Re: MSDS again

I think the short answer to that is yes. If it is rated as hazardous then it needs an MSDS. As for various solutions of a chemical, you will find that some chemicals (eg sodium hydroxide) are more hazardous in solution than as a solid, so they will need their own MSDS.

Re: MSDS Expiry

If you're using the Chemwatch data base, when the list is displayed press the continue button and the list will be extended. You''ll find phenolphthalein / iodine there.

Re: Taste tests. This is what I plan to use for bitter.

Well now you've got me worried - I guess I fell into the "we've always used this" trap when I came here. When we do the taste test I make up the solutions and use half a tablet in 100mLs. The kids dip a cotton bud into the solution and taste it, so they haven't been getting much of a dose,...

Re: Taste tests. This is what I plan to use for bitter.

That sounds like a good idea. We use Chlorquin tablets (an old anti-malaria prescription donated by one of the teachers), but they're running low.

Disposing of Preserved Specimens

Hi All, We have a cupboard full of specimens preserved in jars of unidentified liquid. Some of them are in OK condition. Most of them aren't. :-( I've been here 5 years and don't know if the previous labbie replaced the formaldehyde or not. I know I haven't opened them. My HT wants to get rid of the...

Yes, that's my understanding of the situation. I'm currently in the process of reprinting all my MSDS's because they're all due now!

Re: Welcome back to Term 3

Yes, and isn't it great to be back for this eleven week term. :-|
How is everyone else spending the day - I have to do Emergency Care this afternoon even though I did it in November at the SASS Conference, and there is so much more I could be doing.

Re: budget

We get about $10,000 for a school with about 1000 students. We spent all our money in the first three weeks of this year, because the HT wanted to get textbooks for all of Yr10, plus the senior texts. What really bugs us is that Maths and English get about the same budget as us. But we will pick up ...

Anodizing Aluminium

What dyes do people use for colouring anodized aluminium?
My HT just uses food dye, but it washes off.
I haven't watched the process, so I don't know exactly what she is doing.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.

disposing of Agar plates

Hi Celia Sure, you can use the hotplate. Seal the agar plates in an oven bag. Put the oven bag in the pressure cooker and put it on the hotplate. Get it up to pressure and give it about 20 minutes. This will sterilize the plates. Take the oven bag out of the pressure cooker (don't open it), wrap sec...

Rosalie,

The CSIS manual uses trisodium phosphate as the preferred name for sodium phosphate / trisodium orthophosphate.
In other words they are the same chemical.
Hope this helps.

I Should Have Stayed In Bed

What a horror of a day I had yesterday. I'd taken a FACS day on Friday, and when I came in yesterday the four prep rooms were piled high with glassware for washing up and stuff for tidying away. And two of the teachers had requested phenolphthalein agar for after recess - they had known all last wee...

Agar plates

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. The teacher ordered the plates yesterday as I was going home and needed them for after lunch today, so I went with the first idea and added 10mLs Dettol to 400mL liquid agar. The plates all set OK, now I'll wait to see how they worked. I do like the idea of s...
