Re: Eyes for dissection
It is for year 8 and I don't think they'll value it. I need the teachers to line up their topics with senior bio!

Re: Safety data sheets
Hi Macca, Go to the ChemSupply website. You don't have to login. You can access Safety Data Sheets for most of the chemicals that you would have in stock. I don't know if ths still applies I have used in the past. Yeah I've used this for the full SDS but I was hoping to find some mini SDS for a cou...

Re: Eyes for dissection
We are lucky enough to have a butcher that will get them from a abattoir 3 hours away, he vaccuum packs into class set for me. Our abattoir closed years ago. Eyes are becoming more and more expensive. I just tried to get him to order Hearts, Kidneys & brains and apparently the abattoirs are onl...

Re: Eyes for dissection
Is anyone else having trouble getting eyes this year? I've tried a few butchers and they've said they can't get them anymore and suggested straight from an abattoir. Unfortunately our closest is about an hour away and they charge $4.40/eyeball! So factoring in 2.5 hours of my time (roughly) and $44 ...

Re: chemical register
The way I read it, that's only for if they are on site for 5 days or less. Eg if your school has 2 campuses and one receives all the deliveries and then the chemicals get transferred to the second campus, it doesn't need to be on the first campus' register.

Re: Burettes
I have an old glass bottle with the glass stopper containing 1M ferrous sulphate. I am trying to dispose of the contents (very sludgy-looking) and I just cannot get it open. Is it worth persisting or just put the whole lot in the waste collection stockpile? It's only a 500ml bottle and only about ha...

Re: barium nitrate solution.
After cleaning out the chemical cupboard, I have discovered we have bottles of barium nitrate labelled 1%, 0.5M, 1M and 0.1M. What would you keep? Just the 0.1M?

Fisher biotec, Sigma Aldrich, Gene Target Solutions all have the stain on their Australian websites but I don't know about the trial size.

Re: GelRed Nucleic Acid Gel Stain
I would be asking the teacher where he/she heard about it and if it's from a textbook or something see if there is a recommended supplier. That is a very specific request.

Re: Cleaning Bunsen burners
What do you do with your bunsens when you unscrew them but the whole lot comes out? So the jet hole bit is still up the barrel instead of in the base? Is there a way to get these bits apart without destroying them or am I wasting my time trying?

Re: Water purifier - deioniser etc
Is that 2L or 4L? Ours was all stored in 2L bottles that originally had Coles deionised water in them. I have been here over 2.5 years and the water is still good. I used to have a 20L distilled water drum at my old school that I just kept filling up. We had purchased it during the drought before in...

Re: Water purifier - deioniser etc
I had a 4L one at my previous school. I don't remember where I got it from but it worked really well and I don't remember changing the filters either! From memory, it did need a wipe out after each distillation as the base is where most of the gunk seemed to end up. I've just had a quick look online...

empty bottle disposal
I feel like this is an "I should know this already" question, but what do you do with your empty concentrated acid bottles? I have 2x 32% HCl bottles (plastic) that the acid came in and I have decanted it into winchesters. I have rinsed and dried the bottles a few times. Do you just throw ...

I am not much of a botanist so I am hoping one of you can let me know what sort of seedlings I should buy for yr 7 students to make a terrarium! Have any of you done this? I did a search on here and didn't come up with anything. It's from Core Science 4.

Congratulations! That sounds like a very big and busy school to have 1x part time and 2x full time labbies! I can't even imagine it from my small school with a graduating yr12 class of 6 students!!
