Prepared slides deterioration time

Post by bigmack »

I haven't been doing this job long enough to notice a pattern , but do Human blood slides deteriorate at a quicker rate than other slides ?

I bought some from Southern Bio about 2 years ago as the ones before that were really faded .They looked amazing when they arrived but now they have faded to worse than the originals .

After your thoughts and experience on this thanks .

Two years seems a bit rough, especially what they charge for them. I assume they have been stored in a container out of light? I'd be contacting them and letting them know. I've certainly had slides much older that were still okay. Can't say at what point they would usually fade though.
I've bought some decent, cost effective, slides from Western Histological in Perth. Not the best slides I've ever seen, but certainly good prices and they are more than good enough for schools, especially juniors.

Thanks Merilyn
Yes they have been stored in a slide box in a cupboard with a door on it .
I might give them a call as it does sound a bit lousy .
will check out Western Histological too.

If you have any contact at a Uni, they are also happy to have their students put a pack of slides together for you for nothing. :)
