Agar plate volume

Post by Rowyrow »

How much agar do i need to per plate? just enough to cover the bottom(about 3mm up the side of the dish) or do I need more (say 5mm)?

I usually pour it so it just covers the bottom of the plate which ends up being about halfway up the side of the petri dish, about the same level where the line of the lid sits, if that makes sense... I don't think there is a hard and fast rule about depth but if they are too thin i think they will dry out faster.

I use disposable petri dishes about 8cm in diameter and use about 25ml of agar, usually just enough to fully cover the bottom (3mm should do)
