Alcohol specially denatured
Alcohol specially denatured
I have 4 x 200ml bottles labelled "Alcohol specially denatured". Can you tell what it is ??? I thought maybe Methanol /Ethanol combo, but I'm not sure. (Bottles have been here for a long time.)

"A specially denatured alcohol (SDA) is a combination of ethanol and another chemical, e.g. ethyl acetate in SDA 29, 35, and 35A, added to render the mixture unsuitable for drinking"

Couldn't you just use it instead of methylated spirits. depending on how much you have. Afterall metho is denatured ethanol, so it can't (shouldn't) be drunk.

I always buy denatured ethanol. Should I be getting absolute ethanol?

I guess it depends on what you want it for. Metho (or denatured ethanol) is fine for most things, including making your own universal indicator. I buy ethanol for senior stuff. I guess it depend on price. Metho used to be a lot cheaper that pure ethanol. Not too sure what the price difference is now.
Re: Alcohol specially denatured
To buy absolute ethanol someone in the school needs a licence to purchase it.
If no one has licence you have to make application to govt Don't know if federal or state

Re: Alcohol specially denatured
I purchase my methylated spirits , acetone, and hydrochloric acid from the local buiders supply.. much cheaper. The HCl is good enough for juniors - I buy the better grade just for seniors.
