Where to buy polystyrene?

Post by Merilyn1 »

Anyone have any ideas where I can purchase a slab of polystyrene? The teacher needs 10 pieces which measure 20x20x20cm. I have heaps of small bits but nothing that size. I need it for next week, so will need to buy it, can't depend on people buying things with packaging.

I've gotten some from white goods retailers in the past, and the local fish shop has large boxes I've cut up. Hope that helps.

Dumpster dive at the local tip/recycling centre. Ours has a huge bin for people to put polystyrene in for recycling.

Problem solved - the HT has decreed that I won't be cutting up polystyrene because of the WHS risks not to mention the huge mess it will create. She was off to speak to the teacher to work out another way of doing the prac (they had to construct something that could withstand the elements eg water, wind). I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for all your ideas.

Lucky you. One teacher decided to use styrofoam to "build" a structure and we are still finding bits and pieces (only 3 months later). It literally went with the wind and being static didn't help. The kids thought it was extremely funny and when chastised, replied "so what, that is why we have cleaners". NOT HAPPY WITH TEACHER OR CLASS :redcard:

Well, that is the sort of thing I was worried about, not to mention the time it would have taken to source some! I'm now been sent out to by large cleaning sponges. Hoping I can find some at the $2 shop.

Probably cheaper than my time running around looking for some!
