6m Sodium Hydroxide

Can anyone tell me how much sodium Hydroxide is needed for 6 m Sodium Hydroxide. I am making soap out of Science tracks year 10 page194-195 I sort of worked it out to be about 300g to 1 litre of water. But i would like to check please help

Hi Lindy,

6M Naoh is 240grams per litre of distilled water. There is a lot of heat generated so try and keep your mixing container in cold water in the sink perhaps.

Sodium Hydroxide pellets have a molecular weight of 40.00 x 6 molar = 240grams for 1 litre of 6 molar sodium hydroxide. Simple!

Hi Lindy,

Be careful with the 6 M NaOH. NSW dept of Ed guidlines classify > 4M NaOH as Tch. That is should only be used by teachers or trained lab staff.

When we made soap I measured the 15mL (or whatever) into individual bottles, and put them in the fume cupboard, to be poured out one at a time. That way there's no little cherubs with measuring cylinders etc to spill, over pour etc

. It also meets safety standards blah blah blah.

Hi All,

Just one helpful hint when it comes to large masses of solid NaOH, Add small amounts at a time so that you do not get any clumping of the solid material at the bottom of your mixing vessel. Otherwise it may take longer to totally dissolve the whole mass.....

This will be handy particularly for the 6M NaOH Solution..

So i assume that 6M NaOH is suitable for soap making as I have some students about to start that next week and the item list they gave me says 11.8ml of Sodium Hydroxide (LYE) and no concentration.

We have used 4M with no problems with our soap making. (160g/L)
I suppose really it is no different in hazardous potential though.

Good Heavens!!! 6M NaOH for Year 10 soap making!!!! This is way too caustic to make soap.The experiment would be fraught with danger.2M would be good enough.
