RED CABBAGE INDICATOR

I am finding it difficult to buy red cabbage at the moment. One of our Chemistry teachers has said that the cabbage can be subsitiuted by red roses, however they are very expensive at the moment.

Does anyone know of another substitute that can be used?

Hi Vicki

Perhaps you could try beetroot juice, red wine, cold tea, liquid obtained by boiling geraniums, purple violets or blue hydrangeas. These alternatives were in the Jacaranda Science Book2 page 61.

Red cabbage freezes quite well and pieces can be stored for future use, if I remember correctly...anyway, it's worth a try.

Thanks for all your suggestions. We will try them. Unfortunately, Tibouchina'a don't grow in Goulburn (probably too cold, too many frosts). I did have some red cabbage frozen, but my prep room freezer broke over the holidays.

Beetroot Juice is a good indicator when you can not get red cabbage and Rose petals or any coloured plant material seems to work ok also they do not have to be red just as long as they are dark. Go to you local florest and just ask for any petals that are a bit droppy or have fallen off the flower - they should give these to you - our florest does.
When you can get red cabbage cut it into sections and freeze it then it will be there for you when it is out of season.

When you do find some, chop it up and freeze small amounts, defrost when required. (little sloppy but still ok)

Do people freeze the red cabbage or make the indicator and freeze that for future use?

Freeze the cabbage. I cut it into class size pieces, wrap in cling wrap. It pongs pretty badly when you defrost it (gives the kids something else to whinge about) but still works fine. I had never frozen it before I came here and found it in the freezer waiting for the next prac.

I used to do the red cabbage juice then freeze. I found at Haines Educational Red Cabbage Indicator Jiffy Juice. It's a powder you make up, so easy no smell or mess.
