Re: Eyes for dissection
Picked up 30 eyes this morning from our local butcher (they deliver for free, but needed them for period 1 and didn't want to risk them not being here on time). They charged $4 per eye and no GST. Rosalie, you get GST added?RosalieL wrote: 28 Jul 2025, 09:41 $12 each????and here I was complaining about $4.40 each ex GST and the 1hr40min round trip to get them...

Re: Eyes for dissection
I just checked and I made a mistake. The $4.40 is including GST so yep, we pay it. (I assume the school claims it back somehow - I don't pretend to understand how any finance works...). They also charge 1.5% credit card fee. I've asked around and this is the only place we can get them "locally". I might consider Southern Bio for next year and save myself a few hours driving.Wayne wrote: 31 Jul 2025, 10:33Picked up 30 eyes this morning from our local butcher (they deliver for free, but needed them for period 1 and didn't want to risk them not being here on time). Re: Eyes for dissection
Just did a quick search about how your eyes attracted GST and the ones I've sourced from various places over the years haven't. The butchers I'ved sourced them from deem the eyes fit for human consumption, therefore no GST. While your butcher has deemed the ones you got were not fit for human consumption so get GST.
We get charged a 2% credit card fee, so the school pays the account by direct deposit.

Re: Eyes for dissection
That's interesting Wayne because in WA we're only supposed to source offal that is "fit for human consumption"
I believe the reasoning is stuff that's "fit for human consumption" requires food-safe handling and is less likely to contain nasties meaning less risk.
Although I'd argue if anyone was to eat part of a bull's eye in a science lab that had nasties, the universe would dole out its own punishment

Re: Eyes for dissection
A lot of cultures eat the 'whole' animal.
Quite recently there was a trend to garnish a type of margarita (Black Margarita) with an eyeball. It was quite popular at MONA in Hobart.

Re: Eyes for dissection
So, you know how we use metho to firm up the brains? Has anyone tried it for eyes? I had 20 all packaged together and needed 10 defrosted for today and the other 10 aren't needed till Thursday. Not enough time to re-freeze and defrost in between.... I am worried they will be complete smoosh (technical term?) by Thursday...
Re: Eyes for dissection
What I've done in the past is store them in a 0.9% Sodium Chloride solution in the fridge, it kept them in a good state for (from memory) about a week. Haven't bought eyes in a long time, though!

I've found you can defrost eyes in water in a few minutes. I always refreeze if it's going to be a few days.

Re: Eyes for dissection
Good to know for next time! I usually wrap them individually but I must have been short on time when I got them last time.Marama T wrote: 24 Sep 2026, 06:19 I've found you can defrost eyes in water in a few minutes. I always refreeze if it's going to be a few days.
