I've just been asked if we can do a Prac involving counting yeast cells where a Haemocytometer slide is used .Oxford Textbook of course

They are like a flat well slide but with a Mini-gride in them and a coverslip
To be honest , I have never heard of them and googled it to find that they are available .Even Westlab have them @164 each .But that is going to be quite the expense for a class set .
Does anyone use these ? How do you clean them ?

We have been doing this prac for a while. We purchased the haemocytometer slides from Livingstone I think. I have attached some documents that may help you. I have another document but it is too large to post here. The students seem to be able to use them without any dramas. This year we purchased a microscope and camera so they can take photos of their slides and count the yeast at their leisure!!
Hope this helps.

look up mini grid slides or slide grids. I haven't looked at what the prac entails but these are cheaper and may show/do what the teacher is wanting to achieve.
We do have some Rosalie and I actually did try it to se if it would work but the density of cells depends on how hard the cover slip went on .If I gently pressed on it it would squish them out , and releasing would suck them back . So could not get repeatable results .
Also , the yeast seemed to clump together so it was really hard to get an even spread of cells to count over 9 or 16 squares .I also got air bubble in there . That was probably all me but it looked to hit and miss for the kids to get anything meaningful out of it .

The Haemocytometers have a fixed cavity depth of 0.1mm so the density is not effected by how hard o soft you apply a cover slip as was the case when I used the mini-grids

Ah, I see... what about a mini grid cover slip that you could put on an ordinary cavity slide? Western histological sell them for $10 each (I just looked them up to see if such a thing exists).
