Hi Lisa
I have just found a very old piece of paper with 'Preparation of stains' -
Sudan IV
5g Sudan IV
100 ml Ethanol 70%.
and that is all that it says - fairly straight forward. Good Luck.
PS I have never prepared it before.

Hi!

"The Laboratory" pg 140 says
0.5g sudan III or IV
100ml 70% ethanol. Warm solution in a water bath until stain is dissolved. Filter.

CAUTION: Sudan III or IV is a suspected carcinogen.

This, I have made, and it works great but beware the Sudan stains terribly.

Hope this helps.

Hello Lee & Sue,

In the Appendix D: Generic assessment advise for CSIS it does not say that Sudan III & IV is banned.

Where did you get the info that Sudan III & IV is banned in NSW public schools?

Thanks

Phew, I have just made it up, and bought it, I am glad that we can still use it (for the mean time anyway), Is it because it may be a carcinogen, that it will be banned?. How do they let the schools know?
Cheers Lisa :? :whistling2:

If you log on to chem watch on a fairly regular base, you will see updates, they let you know that way. Or like Ammonium Nitrate they just take it off the market. They use to fax the schools, but Chem watch is the best place for updates on chemicals.

Hi all
When I first started working in the science lab.7 years ago.My head teacher(who trained me) told me Sudan 111 and 1V was banned back then.Seems there are mixed messages coming through.Sometimes I feel the department overacts with some of the chemicals. My feeling is that -if all precautions are taken with the mixing process, there should be no problems. With Sudan, only a small amount is usually required anyway. Having said all that I still don't use it!!
Take care

Hi Lisa
I'd stay away from it if you can.
I've had a brain Tumor so I'm very precautious of alot of things.
I got interviewed by The Cancer Council and they asked me a series of questions of suspected things that cause it and one was have I ever used Hexamethylene Diamine and Cebecyl Chloride (which is used in making nylon polymers)which I used regularly when I worked at the School Of Textiles along time ago.
I have notified the Department and nothing has ever been done to ban it, so I am telling you this to proove that these type of things seem to take time to filter through.
I don't want to scare people but nobody should endure what I went through

Now you have really scared me. We use those chemicals regulary to make nylon in Yr 12 chem.
How are you now? Any tumor is a scary thing but brain tumor the worst. Wishing you all the best
