Sorry Lita.
My previously expressed opinion was instant and based on nothing. I'm too long in the tooth for this pregnancy thing and wasn't working in Science when it would potentially have been a problem. It poses some issues that I've never had to consider, as I was not working in this area during my child bearing years.
I would have to say that I would give serious thought as to whether or not I would work in Science at all during pregnancy. A bit extreme perhaps, but I have become much more cautious in my later years and better safe than sorry.
I apologise for my doom and gloom. Must be nearly time to go home.

Re: Bromine water
Search for MSDS on chemwatch and it said 'May be harmful to feotus/embryo (limited evidence)'... I dont know but if that was me, I would stay well away from bromine water if I was pregnant!
Re: Bromine water
I agree with J.
Be very careful when working with chemicals. I had two children while working in Science in industrial chemistry, so can be done. back to bromine water, make sure you wear gloves, well ventillated area or fume hood if you have it and you should be OK.
Congratulations and when is the happy event??

Re: Bromine water
Yes I didnt have to consider those issues, as i already had mine before I strted work again in labs.
Now that I am older, I would be EXTRA cautious, and definately ask your HOD to make up or handle any suspect substances.
Check the MSDSs carefully for everythingyou use.. find the section that talks about teratogen/feotal etc. And if in doubt, dont handle.
Generally just be extra careful, lots of PPE, ventilation, minimul exposure times , fume hoods etc.
...And Congratulations!

Re: Bromine water
For safety and ease, use the ready-made Bromine water; some things are just not worth the risk.
The shelf-life of Br water is reasonable, and it's not expensive.

Re: Bromine water
I have no intention of becoming pregnant (although several people have suggested that I might be!) but if the MSDS says it "may be harmful to a feotus" I would be showing that to my HT and then not going near it!!!Sassi wrote:Search for MSDS on chemwatch and it said 'May be harmful to feotus/embryo (limited evidence)'... .....And CONGRATULATIONS, Lita!!! (Roll on September!!)
