I am contemplating moving to Melbourne in the future to be close to my children who have gone down that way to live. What is the employment like down that way? Does anyone know what the working conditions are like? pay? are most of the labbies young - and therefore likely to stay in their jobs for years, or older and near retirement?
Any hints?

G'day Pamela,
There are usually one or two jobs going at State High Schools every term and then some in the private sector. The following website gets you to Victorian Government education page.

Scroll down to Human Resouces for conditions and rates of pay.
1. Look for SSO conditions (that's all those not teachers).
2. Pay rates given are for 4 weeks annual leave a year. Most Lab Techs take 10 weeks a year so that pay rate id 48/52.
3. You don't need a degree or diploma but this would be very encouraging.
4. Very few a very young. They can't handle the responsibility!

Scroll further down for recruitment on line. Just play with it and you will find out a few things.

Good luck
