A replacement for Elodia

Post by Rhonda W »

As Elodia has now been classed as a noxious weed, I am unable to purchase it. Does anyone have a suggestion as to a good replacement for Microscope lessons.

I asked the man at the petshop. He was very helpful. I don't remember what he gave me so I'm sorry that I can't be so helpful! I told him I needed something like elodea so the kids could look at it under the microscope. Also, if you do a search with the spelling elodea instead of elodia you will find some more. I don't know which is the correct spelling, but both are out there in chemtalk land!

The replacement I got for Elodea was called Hydrilla. The pet shop had to order it in for me.

Thought.
All the lab techs grow their own supply in indoor tanks and jars . We continue to supply & swop with each other to keep the supply chain going.
It never gets released into waterways, due to our diligent housekeeping and quarantine skills.

I do too mushroom! :-)
If elodea is the best plant for the job.. then elodea we shall have.
Why not?
makes sense...after all, we all grow exotics indoors as well as outdoors
looking at what i have on the window sill of prep room.....aloe vera, mexican cactus, jar of wet scum, coleus, madonna lily, venus fly trap ,devils ivy, ribbon grass
would I allow any of those to 'escape' into the envionment? - NO.
Same with a jar of elodea... all under control

Hi All,

Apart from the fact that elodea is now considered a noxious weed and we have a responsibility to not grow it and to educate the kids, the hydrilla is readily available, can grow just like elodea and looks virtually the same. I was in the same boat earlier in the year and bought hydrilla which I now have growing in my fish tank. The biology teachers used this and we have had no complaints!!
