Banned experiments

Here's a tricky one for all you brains out there.

How do you know when a certain prac is banned in schools. None of my teachers know how to get this information. I know how to get the banned chemical list but what about mixing chemicals for say "the vocano prac". The science faculty is divided over this one.

Any help would be appreciated.

Correct me if I'm wrong - didn't the volcano prac use red lead? If so, then it's an instant no-no. I'm sure the fun-suckers banned that one ages ago.

Ammonium dichromate is orange in colour and when piled in a small mound and lit it burns and leaves a greenish ash. It is carcinogenic as is its residue.
I have used potassium permanagate (3tspns) on a bed of sand shaped into a mound with glycerol (3-5ml) poured into a shallow indentation made in the potassium permanagate. The entire experiment sits on a large coffee tin lid or metal tray and is set up outside away from the science building on a grassed/dirt area. The speed of the reaction depends on the age of the potassium permanganate. Move away once you have poured the glycerol. Keep students at a safe distance and away from the smoke generated.
Lyn.
P.S. This is a teacher dem only. Do not let the teacher do this in the classroom or in the fume cupboard. It takes ages to clean up the mess.

Hi Cindy,
I have a list of banned experiments which I was given about 15 years ago in NSW.
If you post your fax number I will fax it to you.
The ammonium dichromate volcano is a NO!.....as posted the product is carcinogenic.
Be very careful with the permanganate and glycerol.....incredible heat generated.....use small amounts.
As always risk assess...if risks too high don't do it.

Volcano
We have used Bicarb soda, red food colouring and vinegar in a coke bottle - I make a mound of mud and pebbles around the bottle to simulate a 'mountain'... put bicarb in bottle with red food colouring then pour in vinegar,,
BUT - have just found a great one on "about.chemistry" .. it looks like great fun - am going to test it out tomorrow in my prep room...
and whoever said our work wasnt fun! :D

The list was used at a private school I worked in 15 years ago and i have used it in the 4 schools i have worked.
Back then it was routine to do preparation of H2S,Cl2,NO2,SO2 in class so now they can use the fumehoods.
HOD can use discretion however the list was used so expts that used to be done by students became Demonstration only.
When the Chemicals in Schools Handbook came in NSW it clarified much of what is on the list.
