Hello all, Im having a little difficulty in preparing aqueous solutions of silver nitrate. I understand that silver nitrate is soluble however upon adding the silver nitrate crystals to fltered water, a cloudy solution is formed than proceeds to clear and leave behind flake like white precipitate. Any idea of what this is and how i can complete dissolution. Ive tried applying heat.
Much appreciated

Hi Tristan
It sounds like the cloudiness you are seeing is the chloride (or other halogen) precipitating out of the water (eg AgCl[sub]2[/sub]).
Maybe your water deioniser needs a new filter.
Hope this helps.

You can make it up with the de ionised water from the supermarket and there is no precipitate ( if you don't have your own de ioniser) That's what I do, regards Sue

Thanks
