PLEASE BE CAREFUL
PLEASE BE CAREFUL
My dear Lab. Technicians Please, please be careful,
I spent last week working in one high school helping out. I could not believe my eyes what I saw, Sodium metal, Nitric acid and Ammonium hydroxide 30% stored next to each other in ONE cupboard, while Acedic acid was stored underneath,Silver Nitrate in a fridge, while bottle of wine was safely stacked in flammable cabinet ( go figure, high alcohol content or what). Please make sure that you are safe, if not sure how to store some DG class chemicals ask someone; teacher, post question on chemtalk or search net, look up MSDS, but be safe. They do not pay us much anyway.
PS Does anyone know what hourly rate is for Laboratory Manager?

Re: PLEASE BE CAREFUL
The same as any SAO School Admin Officers, its about $25.00 per hour. Thats NSW DET Schools.
I do believe some schools just have not done the CSIS package. Chemical Safety in Schools, at all. A school near us just never did it, until work cover give them a Huge fine. Please be careful. I could hardly believe what I was reading, Jazz, but after hearing from other schools, some people just do not care one little bit. Ask us questions if we can help we will, yes the CSIS is a long hard job, but if you do care do it right.

Re: PLEASE BE CAREFUL
I have started instigating the CSIS in our school lab too (thanks to some lovely generous NSW labbies!) & we're a Vic independent school!!!!!!!! We dont' seem to have anything similar. BUT I think as much OH&S guidance as possible is a good thing. I don't want to get hurt & we have a duty of care to our students (yep even those smart alecy ones!) so I can't believe schools would choose not to use it! Plus 2 of those students are my daughters!!!!!!!!!
On a lighter note....Mmmmm a HUGH fine.... Labbie, does that involve Mr Jackman?....

Re: PLEASE BE CAREFUL
Hi All
Back to the problem at hand all NSW dept schools got 1 copy of CSIS back in 2001
ALL DEPT SCHOOLS so if that school is a dept school the principal should be sacked as the school should of had a audit of some sort in the last 8 years.
I think that is bad and if the lab assistant has been at the school for some time she should know better. If she is new then she needs training.
For all you labbies out there in NSW at the conference this year Richard from Chemwatch will be doing some sessions on the new chemwatch that will start later this year.
The flier will start arriving at your school by the end of Aug.
