Hi Kim,
The recipe I have for MacConkeys Agar is for a 1 L preparation
peptone 20 g
lactose 10g
bile salts 5g
sodium chloride 5g
neutral red 0.075g
agar 12g
The pH should be 7.4+ 0.2
MacConkeys agar is both a differential and selective media
A selective media contains at least 1 ingredient thet inhibits the growth of unwanted organisms. A differential media contains ingredients that are designed to show the differences between micro-organisms

Hi All!!
Why are you using McConkeys Agar??
I've just read the recipe in "The Laboratory" and it needs to be incubated at 37deg C. If you do that aren't you potentially selecting pathogens??
I worked in Pathology labs for years and this agar is what was used to select and identify pathogens.
Is this agar appropriate then to be used in a school environment? I would think this is a potential OH&S issue.
