Hi there,
do your chem teachers do the deflagration of chlorine demonstration in which chlorine gas is produced in a gas jar?
If so, how do you clean up? How long does it have to sit in the fume hood, and how do you tell (other than the canary in a coal mine approach) when it has dispersed? Is there a standard protocol for the cleanup of this expt...cant find anything helpful on internet
Any thoughts much appreciated

Colour of chlorine gas - greenish-yellow - would be a give away I suppose, providing you can get a good look at the gas jar. It is heavier than air, I think, used in trenches etc, and can pour it from one container to another. So I'm not sure how it is supposed to dissipate, unless the vacuum of the fume cupboard is enough to suck it up.

Would you be able to pour water in the jar to make HCl and then dispose as acid? #-o
