Hi everyone,
Can anyone advise the best and easiest way of determining the alcohol content of wine?
Teachers don't want to titrate or use a hydrometer..........

Gas chromatography using 1-propanol as an internal standard, but you'll need a GC.

Nette,
We did this last term as a huge EEI. Frankly, there's no alternative to a hydrometer that is worth it! Tell your teacher he's dreaming (or she).
I went to the local brew shop and got a bunch of home-brew-specific hydrometers, which made life fairly easy. Dairy Farmers also sold me a bunch of empty 1-litre bottles to do the brews in, and we just scaled down the recipe.

Thanks everyone,
We make our wine in fermenting jars. Don't know why the teachers don't want to use the hydrometers. Possibly because they missed a step and didn't take a SG reading before???......
We got an alcometer from a brew shop and they've used that. They wanted a vinometer which are cheap $12, but hard to get hold of quickly.
Thanks again everyone!
Annette.

Ebuiliometer is the best way with dry wines especially. Rather expensive to buy about $1000 from a winemaking supplier.
