Soft Iron Core

Have been asked to source soft iron core ? Would anyone know where I could get some or a possible substitute?

I have soft iron rods - is that the same thing?

We've used mild steel bolts from hardware shops.
Also, I just read on a forum that cutting up and bundling lengths of coat hanger wire works as an iron core.
