Button Cell Batteries NEW Regulation 2022

Post by Westlab - Alice »

Hello all,

As of 22nd June 2022, the Australian Government's mandated changes will apply to packaging and labelling safety standards for equipment containing button/coin batteries sold to consumers. The standard does not apply to the sale of professional equipment (such as water quality monitoring equipment); and used in trades, professions or industries.

- the equipment is not intended for sale to the general public
- the equipment is not intended to be used where children are present

Equipment - button batteries

Post by macca »

Hi Brains trust,

I've just tried to order new pH meters from 2 different suppliers and have been told they are no longer able to sell to schools or the general public because of new government legislation regarding button batteries. I'm in a NSW private school our suppliers are generally Victoria, has anyone heard anything about this.

I also just tried to contact Winc to see if I could by batteries and they know nothing about it. Seems a bit stupid if we can buy the batteries but not the equipment.

Wondering if it is just Victoria or Nation wide, I was told Nation wide by the suppliers.

What is the button battery law 2022?
From 22 June 2022, businesses that supply button or coin batteries, or products containing button or coin batteries, in Australia must comply with these standards. The new safety and information standards require manufacturers to: create secure compartments so children can't access the batteries.11 May 2022

This mandatory standard does not apply to:

consumer goods that were first supplied to a consumer before the requirements became mandatory
professional equipment where all of the following apply:
  • the equipment is intended to be used in trades, professions or industries
  • the equipment is not intended for sale to the general public
  • the equipment is not intended to be used where children are present
  • audio-visual and information and communications technology equipment containing button/coin batteries that are soldered in place.

I guess the law still applies to us as the equipment we are buying will be used by children, assuming a "child" is someone under 16.
