Fume hood on windy days

Post by LabTechBrooke »

I am soldering some boards in the fume hood, and significant wind is coming through from outside (where it is very windy). The fumes are blowing back into the room rather than being sucked up! I have certainly experienced this before, but it was the first time I questioned whether the hood was helping!

Has anyone else had this happen, or is there something wrong with my hood? Is there anything I can do to manage this other than not using it on windy days?

I'd get in touch with the company that services your fume hoods and ask them.
If you haven't had them serviced, they should be every 12 months. Some companies will say it should be done every 6 months, which would be relevant in a serious lab but once a year is enough for schools.

I tend to agree with Merilyn .
When running , ours has such an up draft , I've given up ever using the Bunsen's .Was similar at my old school .
I'd be getting the extractor fan checked out .

Get it checked out... on windy days even with ours off they go into alarm when they get a downdraft, this tells me they are working beautifully.
