Digital Thermometers

Post by bigmack »

Bought some of these last year from Westlab . Basically just use them for seniors where more accurate temps are required .
We thought they would be simpler to use than the ones that are for data loggers .

Alas I was given one back in the middle of a Yr11 student independent research prac saying it suddenly started displaying "Hi "
Well it sure did .Didn't take much to realize that the shaft had split open and obviously liquid had entered it .

I then discover the Students have been sitting it in boiling 2Mol/L HCl :-(
So not sure if our Data logger ones would have stood up to this abuse or whether the shafts on these ones just aren't cut out for it .
I suppose they are all Stainless steel and we all know how that can etch holes through Stainless sinks and dish washers .

We bought some temperature probes. The physics teacher did'nt check the max temp (120 degrees C) and cooked them! Now we've got probes that do minus 20 degrees C to 330 degrees C.
Also it's possible the shaft on your probe wasn't rinsed after each use, which wouldn't be good for it.

That's highly likely Marama.

Looking at it again , it looks like it has split along the seam where they roll the tube from flat sheet .

Those are the exact ones we have. I'm pretty sure ours have only been used for water so they are still going well.
