Spring balance springs

Post by Pm706Narrogin »

Hi all,

I'm finding one of the things that gets broken the most in our lab is our spring balances, namely having too much force applied to the point the spring bursts.

We've got a bunch of spare parts on a shelf that I assume has been cannibalised from previously burst spring balances but no springs. Apart from a couple of the hooks that have gone missing, I've never had cause to use any of the other spares.

Has anyone had any success finding replacement springs? Chucking a whole balance cause of one faulty part seems wasteful but at the same time I also don't want to keep a billion spares that will never get used because we've got no springs to reassemble some balances

Alas the spring is the “Star of the dish “ in a Spring balance .

If it’s buggered then its time to ditch it .
I guess the problem lies with the plastic case that separates when excess weight ( force ) is applied .

The spring should not break or stretch when the balance is fully extended . Only when the end busts out does the spring experience pain .

Maybe we should be strengthening the plastic housing so it does not fall apart when brut force is applied .

Or maybe the manufacturers should be :cheesy:……oh wait :whistling2:

So what sort do you have ?

We have the second type.

Curiously it's mostly the green 2.5N ones that seem to burst. The others I never have any issue with
