Staff Development Days

Post by kimmy »

Just wondering what other SASS/Science Staff do on the Pupil Free/Staff Development day in other schools.
We are thinking of visiting other schools to see how they run their Science/Home Science prep rooms etc.
Any one interested in this. Every one has different ideas and if we could see what other schools are doing I think that would be great.

Hi Kimmy,
The schools in Armidale( both public & private) hold meetings for the lab assistants usually twice a year. We take a turn at each school which usually includes lunch as well. Our meetings go for ~2 - 2 1/2 hours and is a great way of getting info on just about any aspect of the job. The last meeting included staff from a few Tamworth schools and even from Moree. I'm not sure if Tamworth schools get together, but you're welcome to come to our next meeting. I can let you know when the time comes, but it won't be on the first day of term. :)

Hi Judy.
Would love to invite myself to one of your get-togethers if I may. I would have to travel but would be worthwhile to get to know some others in the same job with the same problems. Look forward to hearing from you.

Here on the Far North Coast of NSW, we have a Science Collegiate group which meets once a term, usually on a Wednesday, when most of our schools do sport. We include public, private and Catholic schools and find it a great networking tool. We each have a turn to host the meeting beginning with a luncheon. Our TAS assistants meet at the same school so we can share driving. Our area covers from Tweed Heads to Lismore, Casino, Evans Head and as far as Woodenbong and Bonalbo. Sometimes a guest speaker is organised eg manual handling, suppliers demonstrating new equipment, discussion of CSIS, sometimes it's a "show and tell" afternoon eg equipment, pracs etc, and we usually have a look at the labs / prep rooms etc. It's a valuable time for new assistants to learn tips from some of us "oldies" but we all learn something new al times. It's also worthwhile to share problems, someone generally has a solution or suggestion.

the above sounds great would any lab assistants in the Quirindi/Tamworth/Gunnedah/Scone area be interested in doing something like that. A get together even if we only do it once a term and include Home science and even the Library.
