Explosion in science block in NSW

Hey guys,

I was just look on NineNSM and they have reported that ther has been and explosion in a science block in a NSW high school....does anyone know what has happened??

Todays Daily Telegraph states that there was an explosion at Hay War Memorial High School but they weren't sure what caused it

Its an extremely good case for only turning the gas on when you need it. And have it off at all other times. Happy Lab Teching

A big damage bill is expected after an explosion and fire this morning at the Hay War Memorial High School in southern New South Wales.

One block has been destroyed and its upper storey severely damaged and the blast has knocked out the wall of the school hall.

New South Wales Fire Brigades spokesman Superintendent Craig Brierley says the blast happened at 2:40am AEST.

"The first fire crews arrived within five minutes to find that there had been [an] explosion in the two level science lab," he said.

"The explosion has caused a fire which was quickly extinguished, but both levels of the building have been extensively damaged. The fire brigade are remaining at the scene and the cause of the explosion will be investigated by the fire brigade and the police."

Windows in homes and shops within 500 metres were affected.

Inspector Paul Huxtable from Deniliquin police says it was a significant blast.

"It's quite a mess to be honest ... the building where the explosion emanated from is still standing, it's a solid brick construction. However, it certainly has significant structural damage and as well as other debris-related damage, smashed windows and holes in the wall and the like," he said.

Inspector Huxtable says the blast also rocked nearby homes in Hay, but its cause is unclear.

"It's quite a mystery at this stage but, look, if anyone saw anything or heard anything at that time of the morning, obviously we'd encourage them to bring that information forward to police or if anyone should hear anything subsequent to the explosion," he said.

"There were some windows shattered from neighbouring houses, but the school is somewhat isolated and it's been cordoned as a crime scene, the entire block, so people are being kept well back."

An Education Department spokesman says the damage will be assessed to ensure there is minimal impact on students when they return from holidays on July 17.
