Filtration Apparatus

Has anyone used glass filter crucibles with a Guko sleeve. We used Buchner funnels for the analysing the sulphur content of lawn food prac in year 12 Chem but this isn't 100% successful and we are looking to use sinctured glass filters instead.
As we have to purchase all the gear I was wondering if others have used this equipment and how successful it is.
Any feedback greatly appreciated.

Dee, we had this problem on the forum just before last holidays.
The prac you are talking about is messy and hard to filter, because the particles are very tiny. Our HD has a nifty prac for determining S in fertiliser using titration method. It is very successful with our students. If you like, give me your fax number and I will fax it to you, before you spend money on the new set up.

Hi all,
We finally bit the bullet earlier this year, and bought new crucibles. After shopping around, the best deal I got was from Science Supply Australia. Sintered glass crucibles were $30.36, and the rubber gaskets to go with them were $5.65. Had great success this year with nearly 100% accuracy! HD insisted on doing this prac this way, as they get to do titrations later on.
Regards, Ellice.

Hi Lada
Yep, I made a typo with the fax number and I haven't been in since last Wednesday so just got message.
Correct fax number is 02 43323543
ooops, sorry about that!!!!!!!
Looking forward to getting the prac, but we decided to order one set of equipment anyway, just to try it out and if any good we will put in the budget for additional sets next year. Being only seniors we can justify the expense a bit more, due to larger numbers of kids doing the pracs.

Thanks Dee

Hi there,

Its been ages since I have been able to spare the time to see what was going on in Chemtalk. I have just been going through some of the topics and the filtration one especiallly. We are a yr 11/12 college and also do the analysis of sulphur in lawn fertilizer using the buchner funnels but it has never been a success. I was wondering if Lada could fax me a copy of the prac using the titration mehod. (Ref August 14th 2007)Also Ellice, if you could send me a copy of the prac using the sintered discs (ref Aug 15th 2007) and any information you have about the process would be great. My fax no is 03 232440.

Thanks Tried to do a smile but didn't work.
