Re: Sourcing of frozen rats
Piglets were amazing. Organs much bigger, not smelly like rats. The students really benefited from and enjoyed that dissection!

Re: Vinegars for titration
Thanks Rosalie.
Not many come with the % on the bottle, so we've had to find it on the MSDS or manufacturer's website etc.

Vinegars for titration
Hi everyone, Each year we find it harder and harder to get different types of vinegar with different % of acetic acid in them, which also have the % listed on the bottle. All vinegar seems to be around the 4% - 5% mark. This year, we've been asked to supply white, white balsamic and apple cider vine...

Re: distilled water
Where do you all buy your DI water from?
We have a Millipore deioniser which we need a new cartridge for. We ordered it 8 weeks ago and still not coming despite checking, ringing etc.
Having to resort to buying water.

Re: Chemwatch for Independent schools
Very disappointing that Chemwatch seems to have moved away from providing a good program that can be used by schools as well as industry. Common solutions (HCl 0.25M or 0.5M) are no longer found on a search. :banghead2: When "renaming" them they come up with 3 lines of chemical names which...

Re: Winemaking alcohol content
Thanks everyone, We make our wine in fermenting jars. Don't know why the teachers don't want to use the hydrometers. Possibly because they missed a step and didn't take a SG reading before???...... #-o We got an alcometer from a brew shop and they've used that. They wanted a vinometer which are chea...

Risk Assessments
Hi everyone, Can someone let me know which Aus Standard or other guideline states that Risk Assessments should be done for each prac? We are struggling to get teachers to do RAs for each prac each time that they are done. At the moment we have a RA for eg Year 9 Term 2 "Kitchen Chemistry" ...

Cleaning evaporating dishes
We have some evaporating dishes which have been used for an Evaporating Coca Cola Prac. The dishes have had the Coke burned onto them terrible and nothing will get it off (scrubbing, bleach, HCl).
Any help?

Re: Wine making
Thanks Smiley!
The task sheet and ingredients list looks great!
We use lots of stuff - apple juice, apples, bananas, orange juice, dextrose/brown sugar/sucrose, tea bags, sultanas, citric acide, tartaric acid, wine yeast, yeast nutrient, pectinol, gelatine, and the list goes on!

Wine making
Year 11 Chemistry classes here have been making wine for the last three years, but we still have not perfected the process and get mixed results. Can anyone send their procedures and ingredients for making wine so we can go through them to prepare for next year? We can't use stone fruits due to avai...
