esters- please assist with recipe for a bad smelling one

Post by Ocean Breeze »

Would love an ester recipe that smells like bona fide vomit or something nasty.

I know that the butanoic itself smells bad but its the actual ESTER I would like to smell bad.
We have some noce fruity and wintergreen ones, but need a nasty
Anyone help?

How about methanol or ethanol and ethanoic acid - gives you a solvent smell?

From my information Methanol and Citric acid give "rotten oranges" (methyl Citrate)

Can't say that I have ever had it made though, so I don't know how bad a smell it is.

How about Methyl salicylate? ..smells like Dencorub - produced by esterifying salicylic acid with methanol.

That's the one. Ethyl ethanoate (aka. ethyl acetate) is used as a solvent in varnishes. It has a sweet but sickly scent.

You can also scent it from wines, since it is the ester of ethanol and vinegar, though an excessive amount is a bad sign.

(It's also used to kill and preserve insects for display.)

EXTREME O.H.&S ISSUE and true story
Now to set the scene

First period this morning Year 11 Physics Prac. Exam only 8 students confined space. The prep. room door opens a gasping HT enters letting toxic fumes flow through to the prep. room. A student silent but deadly has let fly, OMG I'm talking dry reaching fumes, no student is even stirring.

The HT opens doors and proceeds to turn the fume cupboard on how embarrassing, but noooooooo he continues to let fly for the entire period. If you had struck a match I'm sure the place would have gone boom

20mins after the exam has finished and the smell still hasn't cleared. and my HT is in total shock lol

I could lend our now Yr12 student, I smirk every time I see him :giggle:

But seriously Butyric Acid (butanoic acid)

We used to make one that smelt like dead cows! It was used to catch screw worm up in PNG, at the CSIRO base there. Gotta remember what was in it, apart from Butanoic Acid.

10 drops of Butyric acid plus 10 drops amylalcohol (I think), 2 drops conc sulphuric acid in hot water bath. If not amylalcohol will be methanol or ehanol or pentanol- but I guess you already know that. The smell is vomitous smelly socks and if you keep it for organic collection add a fruity ester to make it bearable. I always turn waste butyric into a fruit ester as our waste is only collected once a year at most. I'll be interested to know which one it is so we can avoid it.
