Re: Transport of chemicals
You are under no obligation to transport chemicals.
The second campus should have their own supply and stored correctly.
In 20 years I have not transported chemicals in my car...it is too dangerous!!!!

Re: Disposal of flammable chemical mixture
Hi Joy, This reaction will stay hot for a time so be careful. Leave it in the bucket in the fumehood, turn on the fumehood and add lots of water to the mixture....when it has stopped reacting and is cool wash it down the sink with copious quantities of water. Discourage him from doing this reaction a...

Re: Safe Work Procedures?? Risk assessment
Hi Smiley,
i am in Qld and we purchased the Philip Crisp software...it is somewhere to start.
Having worked in NSW for 15 years I know they are well ahead of Qld on OH&S and hazardous substances and the sooner we get the CSIS package the better.

Re: Banned experiments
I would like to clarify the list of "banned" experiments I have shared. This is meant as a guide and to alert new labbies to some of the dangers. The list was given to me years before we had the CSIS handbook and was very helpful. In 20 years experience I am aware that there are teachers who...

Re: Copper sulfate soultion
Concentrations of solutions are based on their molecular weight.....so the molecular weight per litre gives you a 1M solution, then you work your desired concentration from that...it is copper sulfate solution just the pentahydrate not the anhydrous. The anhydrous solution would be made up on its mole...

We have Miele and that is the machines I have used at previous schools.
You can buy test tube baskets and racks for measuring cylinders, flasks etc
the machines are robust and the service here and in NSW is excellent...worth the money

Re: Ebony Rods
Put all the cloths and the rods in a drying oven at a temperature similar to a clothes dryer for about 20mins...works wonders.
Failing that dry off cloths and rods using a hair dryer.
The hair dryer works on the dome of the Van de Graaf if it is a high humidity day as well

Re: Sodium Dichromate for cleaning glassware
That is a bit extreme ,the dichromate and acid.
For 20 years I have used a dilute solution of oxalic acid...works for me.
whilst oxalic acid is poisonous it is less hazardous than dichromate and chromic acid.

We buy foam sheets from an art supplier and cut them to size.

You should be using water baths or heating mantles
if you don't have either put the flask into a beaker of water and heat the water...much safer
