Some advice is needed. Would micro bunsen burners be more appropriate for use with distillation outfits. Students (Y12) are doing an ester prac and using normal bunsens to heat the 50ml pear shape flasks. Have had two spectacular mishaps this afternoon and am wondering if the micro bunsens would be less hazardous.

Re: Micro bunsen burners
Nowdays when using flammable substances you should use heating mantles,
Or use Bunsen under a water bath
Or use Bunsen under a water bath

Re: Micro bunsen burners
Does anyone manufacture heating mantles which can be used with distillation apparatus and accommodate pear shaped flasks on the end of Lieberg Condensers? Would a waterbath be appropriate in these circumstances with this type of apparatus and would you get the heating capacity to achieve the change which occurs? I am pretty much on permanent L-plates when it comes to understanding the finer points of senior chemistry so appreciate input.

P.S. We do use a waterbath to warm methylated spirits for the starch in leaves prac.

You should be using water baths or heating mantles
if you don't have either put the flask into a beaker of water and heat the water...much safer

We use 500ml beaker with water for a water bath. And yes, the temp gets to 100oC which is enough for distillation or reflux. We use heating mantle with 250ml round bottom flasks for distillation of alcohol and do demo only, as we only have 2 mantles.
