Hi o mighty ones!
My teacher found this somewhere (see attached) and would love to do it with her students. Problem is we do not know how to make the NO2 and seal it properly in the flasks... Would you be able to help me please

Hi Sassi,
to make NO2 you add conc nitric acid to copper turnings.
if you give me your fax number i will send you the diagram of the equipment we use.You can collect it this way in round bottom flasks or large glass syringes.Seal with rubber bungs in tight and for the flasks add parafilm to make the seal perfect.
all done in a fumehood of course and wear gloves because NO2 will "burn" your skin

Re: Making NO2 gas
Sassi,
I hope the teacher only plans to do a teacher demonstration of this prac as the gas is toxic and can have some serious effects on the respiratory system. Can't have the darlings expiring on the laboratory floor.
Lyn.

which 'darlings'?
Teacher or students?
Teacher or students?

Oh yes, teacher demo only
Re: Making NO2 gas
Sassi,
be very careful with N2O4. it is very toxic, choking gas. One of our teachers managed to evacuate whole building. The stopper came off, or was not sealed properly. I have a number of safe practicals on equilibrium, if she agrees to more safe options.
Let me know.

Hi Lada
Was just reading the info you gave to Sassi. I was wondering if you could let me have some safe alternatives to equilibirium experiements as well. We have a chemistry teacher from SIDE coming to visit next week and wants to do this experiement with the Nitrogen dioxide gas but I am not happy with the consequences it may cause.
thanks
