Are juniors allowed to use scalpels?

Are juniors allowed to use scalpels?

Post by lizzieb »

My new HT just asked me to check whether other schools allow junior students to use scalpels during dissections?

Our teachers do let the Juniors use scalpels. But with 30 or so in class, they split the class, one lesson 15 do it, the next lesson the other 15 do it. That way they can keep an extra eye or two open. The naughty students are warned.

we allow our 7-10's to use the scalpels but in groups, one tray per desk (10 desks) and im helping by wandering around the room watching the little petals disect.
If I see a problem I call the teacher.

For our junior classes scalpels and sharp scissors are used for heart and kidney dissections and we have a lot of newspaper handy to keep benches clean. Single edged blades are used for flower dissections and cutting up onion for microscope pracs. Small utility knives for cutting up potato, fruit etc. We use 150mm square white wall tiles to do a lot of cutting on. Our pracs are done with groups of two or three students. Yes we/I keep a close eye on making sure that all the sharp implements of destruction are handed back. Yes I kick up a fuss if they aren't.

Our juniors are allowed to use scalpels, but I send all dissecting equipment out with signs stating how many there are. For instance, I have laminated sheets that say "You have (big gap) Scalpels" which enable me to write in white board marker how many I have issued. The teacher then is responsible to count out and in the equipment used. We use these signs for equipment like dissecting instruments, handlenses, and razors. My predecessor was a very smart and organised lady!

We have the same sort of system, except I put a sheet in with all practicals, the teachers are good and use them correctly. I also attached a copy mini MSDS if needed. All juniors are allowed to use scapels, although if they get broken they come back to me, the sharps containers in the labs are more for show, as the little darlings can get them out. :coffee: :coffee:

Hi Macca - That looks like a great form! Maybe I should work on something like that :) Would take a bit of effort though I think...
