easy way to make sulfur chunks for conductivity expts?

Post by Ocean Breeze »

Anyone got a quick & easy way to make chunks of sulfur. For yr 8 & yr 11 chem pracs. Want to test for conductivity.
I have a few pre made ones, but now need about a dozen. Whats the best type of sulfur to make that will not break down too quickly? :-)
( I'm a spelling hoon.... had to edit!)

Ok. I have come up with something that may work.
Heat till melted in evap dish. Allow to cool a little, but before it sets, pour into icecube trays. They twist & pop out quite easily.

Hi Barbara Rae
Probably wont help now but for future.... we have sulfur roll. It is in a big plastic 1kg jar and each roll is an inch (25mm!) diameter. It was here when I came last year. The bottle has an "Omega Scientific" sticker on it - phone number 08 2734119. Don't know how old it is or whether it is still available. Hope this helps.

Hi Sue,
good idea for my next order. Its a fair bit of fussing around to get the sulfur heated, hotter than melted, but not too hot that it discolours. Then getting it into the mould before it solidifies again. The teacher was very pleased, but I think buying as roll will be the way of the future. Thanks Sue :-)

ChemSupply have sulfur roll listed as one of their products. They must have a distributor listed for your state. Check it out. The majority of our chemicals are from ChemSupply and are ordered through Omega Scientific.
