Hot wax experiments

Post by Mother »

Hi all
Could someone please tell me if using melted wax for pracs is allowed.Year 11 chem.kids just did a prac. using melted wax and I was very afraid for them as one had a mishap with the hot wax through his own stupidity. The teacher was not too concerned.
Cheers

From the bible page 183 Paraffin Max CAS no 8002-74-2 safe for K-12.

Harmless. Used for melting point curves. Note: Fumes of paraffin wax considered to be Hazardous, (CAS No. 8002-74-2). When heating use a well-ventilated area.

It's fine for all years with paraffin/candle wax with eye protection and ventilation of course! Get them to wear old washing up gloves if your worried about their ability to to get it all over their hands.

Oh darm!!! I was hoping that it would be dangerous,so I could ban it from being used!!!
It makes such a mess, and I have better things to do than clean up hardened wax on benches and floors.
Thanks for your input

ha Ha Lee. I know what you mean!

I re-use the same equipment/glassware from year to year, without cleaning. Its a pointless exercise otherwise. :)
