Quantity of Petrol Stored

Post by sunray18 »

Is there a maximum quantity of petrol that can be stored in a school - and how much is that? Where can we find out the quantities of dangerous goods we are allowed to have on-site.

"QUOTE" taken from CSIS section 1 Vol 1 Figure 1.3 page 11
class 3 Flammable liquids
* All underground tanks containing flammable liquids PG1,11 or 111 (Thats packing Groups =PG)
must be licensed.
* 100 Litres of Pg1 or 11 (such as Petrol, Methylated Spirits, acetone)
* 1,000 Litres of Pg 111 (eg Kerosene)
* A Licence is not required for any quantity of manufactured product, provided that is it kept in daugerous goods approved containers no larger than 5 litres each for PG11 or 25 Litres of each for PG111.

Note: Manufactured product means a mixture of dangerous goods with at least 10% of solid material. Manufactured product includes some paints, lacquers, adhesives and varnishes. The MSDS will confirm whether a product fits this designation.

END OF QUOTE""

Do hope this helps a little, your packing group would be on the MSDS for your petrol.

Sorry Richard, It does not mention ride ons, but if the tank is labelled, and the rideon is stored correctly, should be ok. So long as you do not go over 100 Litres, or a special licence would be needed.

Hi All,

Hey Richard, This is a flaw in the system, when you have fuel in tanks of machinery the fuel is classed as being "IN USE" this does not need to be added to the combined storage list/s..

On the topic of storage of petrol and diesel, etc, our Ag assistant (not me!) has asked if he is expected to keep his petrol, diesel, etc in a flammable Liquids cupboard, or if he can just make a wooden door to secure the storage shelf. He does not have massive amounts. My reading of CSIS suggests that any secure spot would be OK in an Ag Shed situation. How do other people read this requirement?

Hi Ian,

The storage of flammable liquids must be within the Flammable Liquid Cabinet.

From what I understand you are allowed to store what they call “minor quantities” outside of a flammable liquids cabinet. From my reading and understanding of CSIS less than 10L needs no special storage requirements at all and up to 20L should be stored securely, ie under lock and key. On that I would say that up to 20L stored in appropriate containers and in a locked workshop is ok?

In a prep room you may have 5L per item, 5l of metho, 5l acetone, etc but no more, those 5L containers can amount to 20L before a lockable F.C. is needed. These items are called in USE, much the same as the rideon.

VoL 1 Section 1 1.3 Dangerous Goods Legislation page 7

" Where small volumes (Less than 5 Litres) are stored in classrooms access by students must be limited and the storage area secure. Secure storage areas may include lockable storage cupboards and stores attached to general class rooms in Pimary and Secondary Schools.

Up to 20 Litre may be stored together in a laboratory, preparation room, tas workshop or visual arts workshop without requairing FLC," etc etc '
