chromatography solvent

earlier someone was asking about petroleum ether to use in a year 12 prac. and they were given the solution hexane/acetone to use instead. could someone who has tried it with success tell me how much of each quantity to use cos i have a boy in year 12 that has to do this part before Monday 11th august....thanks for your help :

i havn't used anything yet but there was a topic on it earlier on and someone mentioned the hexane/acetone stuff worked and i don't want to mess up his experiment with the worng stuff. have you use meths. with good results?

Hi Lainyv,
It was me that suggested the Hexane /acetone mix. Our resident Chemistry expert recommended this as the solvent.
The topic was Forensic Chemistry and the prac was Garden greens. It asked for a 9:1 mix of petroleum ether and Acetone. I made a 9:1 mix of Hexane/ acetone and as far as I remember it wored really well.

havn't got the fax yet is it possible to write it on this site. he has done the first part of the task, creating the green goo with leaves and a mixture of acetone/meths now he needs to let it dry and then add another solvent (this is where the petroleum ether was supposed to be used) and the different colours will appear is there anyone out there who can help by thursday?
