Thymolphthalein

Post by lesnsw »

Does anyone use Thymolphthalain? I have been asked to purchase some as an indicator. It's not in the CSIS appendix 4 so I have no idea of user codes. Is it worth having?

I've never really used it. It's a pH indicator with a similar range to phenolphthalein but turning a deep blue colour instead of bright fuschia (both are clear in acidic solution). I believe it has a sharper end point and more visible colour transition. If accuracy really matters, go for thymolphthalein, otherwise phenolphthalein should work well enough.

However, the colour change might be better for demonstrations.

I know when I was looking for it it was difficult to find. From memory Westlab or SSA may have had it?? We wanted it for the "Magic Jug" demo but it worked just as well without it, abet a little less spectacular.

Thanks. I shall try and deter the teacher who wants it. In the too hard basket and really not necessary for his 'playing' around.
